  5. scientists use the term ethnic group to refer
  6. to groups or societies who feel a common
  7. sense of identity, often based on a
  8. traditional shared culture, language,
  9. religion, and customs. It may or may not
  10. include common territory, skin colour, or
  11. common descent. The USA, for example, is
  12. often described as a multi-ethnic society
  13. because many members would describe
  14. themselves as members of an ethnic group
  15. (Jewish, black, or Irish, for example) as
  16. well as their national one (American).
